About the Opportunity
First Baptist Church South Hill is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Finance Manager to oversee the church's day-to-day accounting and financial operations.
This position is ideal for an accounting or finance professional who combines strong technical skills with integrity, sound judgment, and a heart for serving in a ministry environment. The Finance Manager will work closely with the Business Administrator to maintain accurate financial records, administer payroll, prepare financial reports, support budgeting and audits, strengthen internal controls, and help ensure responsible stewardship of church resources.
What You'll Do
As Finance Manager, you will:
 
  • Maintain the general ledger, chart of accounts, and supporting accounting records.
  • Record financial transactions and prepare general and adjusting journal entries.
  • Manage monthly and year-end closing activities.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit card statements, contributions, deposits, and other balance-sheet accounts.
  • Track and report restricted and designated funds accurately.
  • Manage accounts payable, vendor payments, employee reimbursements, W-9s, and related vendor records.
  • Ensure contributions/donations and other revenues are accurately posted and reconciled with bank deposits, membership contribution system and accounting records.
  • Process or coordinate semi-monthly payroll for salaried and hourly employees.
  • Review payroll deductions, taxes, benefits, and authorized changes for accuracy.
  • Complete payroll tax filings and reconciliations, including Forms 941, W-2, and W-3.
  • Process retirement contributions and support workers' compensation and other payroll-related reporting.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, cash-flow reports, budget-to-actual reports, and ministry/department financial reports.
  • Identify financial variances, unusual transactions, trends, and discrepancies requiring attention.
  • Assist with preparation and administration of the church's annual operating budget.
  • Prepare financial records, schedules, and supporting documentation for audits and financial reviews.
  • Maintain accurate, organized, confidential, and audit-ready financial records.
  • Establish and follow financial policies and internal control procedures.
  • Recommend improvements to accounting procedures, workflows, documentation, and financial systems.
  • Provide financial guidance and support to church staff, ministry leaders, volunteers, auditors, and leadership as appropriate.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible accounting, bookkeeping, finance, or related financial experience.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on payroll processing experience, including payroll taxes, deductions, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, accounts payable, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and month-end/year-end closing.
  • Experience supporting budgets, audits, financial controls, or fund accounting.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state payroll tax requirements.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience using computerized accounting and payroll systems.
  • Strong analytical, reconciliation, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and ability to manage recurring deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality involving employee, donor, payroll, financial, and church information.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3–5 years of accounting or financial management experience.
  • Experience with Paycor, PayDay, or comparable payroll systems.
  • Experience processing payroll for both salaried and hourly employees.
  • Experience with nonprofit, church, or other mission-driven fund accounting.
  • Experience with accounting and church-management software.
  • Additional accounting, payroll, nonprofit finance, or financial-management training or certification.
  • CPA certification is beneficial but not required.

Work Environment
This is a full-time, hybrid position based at First Baptist Church South Hill in Chesapeake, Virginia.
The role involves regular use of computers, spreadsheets, payroll systems, and financial software. Some periods may require additional flexibility due to payroll processing, month-end and year-end closing, budgeting, audits, and tax-reporting deadlines. Attendance at selected staff meetings, leadership meetings, or church conferences may also be required.
Compensation
$75,000–$85,000 annually, based on qualifications and experience.
